Thursday, March 3, 2016 – 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
El Paso Museum of Art – Energy Auditorium – FREE
1 Arts Festival Plz, El Paso, TX 79901
Talk will begin in the Museum’s El Paso Energy Auditorium for the 12 min. video: In Depth—Ismael de Anda III, and then move to the galleries to view and discuss de Anda’s work Luz Mutante.
L.A. artist Ismael de Anda III, originally from El Paso, will return to his native city on March 3, 2016, and give an informal talk before his work Luz Mutante in the EPMA. De Anda donated the work to the EPMA last year, following its presentation in the 2013 El Paso-Juárez Border Biennial. Continuing this artist’s focus on mutant/hybrid forms that reinterpret personal history and cultural identity, Luz Mutante melds de Anda’s shifting memories of his grandfather’s border frontier farm on the banks of the Rio Grande between Presidio, Texas, and Ojinaga, Mexico as well as his upbringing within the El Paso/ Juárez frontera. De Anda received his BFA from UTEP and MFA from L.A. area CalArts in 2000, and in 2010 he was awarded the 2010 Japan-United States Arts Program Fellowship by the Asian Cultural Council.
Preceding de Anda’s talk will be a screening in the Museum’s El Paso Energy Auditorium for the 12 minute video, In Depth—Ismael de Anda III, from the In Depth artist series; produced by Mike Plante (Sundance Film Festival) and co-produced and directed by Chris Peters (CalArts).
